Name: Ryosuke Takuma, “Kyoken” (Mad Dog),
Age: 22
Birthdate: 4/29
Nationality/Cultural Group: Japanese
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 285 lbs
Gender: Male
Affiliations: Kyoto Yakuza Family (former), University Freshman
Appearance: Physically he appears with a large frame, tall and almost hulking, some might mistake him for a brute. His frame is further enhanced by the clean but heavily repaired and stitched green trenchcoat he wears. Below that he wears a black sleeveless shirt, and fatigue style pants that contain several pockets. He walks with large military style boots with steel toed protection. The other signature aspect of his appearance is a black beanie he wears to prevent his mid length brown hair from being easily grabbed in a fight. His brown eyes tend to be somewhat haunted, as if he is looking at a point far in the distance. He bears several scars on most sections of his body, with the most dense and nastiest collection being on his forearms. Around his neck he wears an amulet that looks oddly like a skull wreathed in flame.
Belongings: He carries several things with him, his long history of homelessness and self reliance has him with a hermit crab-style mentality towards his coat which he has heavily modified to suit his needs. Adding in several pockets internally as well as embroidered repairs, an attempt to make his repairs look more like a dash of character rather than ragged stitch ups. He carries with him a Sewing kit, first aid kit, Utility knife, Multi tool, a pack of cigarettes he rolls himself, and a battered lighter, that would look entirely plain if not for it’s exceptional make. Other than that his worldly belongings don't amount to much, however he has a fair bit of laundered money stashed away from his days working alongside the Yakuza. The purpose they were saved for is no longer relevant.
Personality: Ryo is a man haunted by his past, and looking to chart a new course with his life, as well as bring an end to those that wronged him. He was a Pit fighter and Muscle for the Yakuza, though his participation was not entirely by choice. He enjoys the fight in the moment, but for the most part he is somewhat tired of causing death and damage. He seeks redemption in a way, even though deep down he knows that true redemption is beyond his reach. He contents himself with attempting to seek a better or kinder way of being as a way to somewhat balance the scales though he knows he never truly can. Personality wise he enjoys being self sufficient, tasks like sewing, cooking, and cleaning bring him a sense of peace that very little else does, but beneath the surface he can be hotblooded. His anger starts out at a cool almost ice cold level but can grow into a blazing fire as he gets lost in the carnal joys of combat.
Character Strengths:
Uncommon Physique: Even without magical enhancements his physical strength and stamina are a force to be reckoned with, as a former professional fighter, this left zero room for him to slack off in his physical conditioning and training. He has the strength to meet or outmatch the vast majority of people, and the endurance to outlast
Honed Instincts: Fighting in death matches constantly from a young age has honed his instincts and ability to sense danger to an insanely high level. Although not on par with a power of precognition, clairvoyance, or a yokai, He has a survival instinct near peak human levels.
Self Sufficiency: skilled in tasks that most people wouldn’t associate with him, he is a deft hand at cooking, cleaning, and sewing. He is also skilled at first aid, and treating traumatic injuries in the short term.
Strong Willed: His history and close brushes with death have left him especially strong willed, able to endure significant discomfort or attempts to change his mind or manipulate him. He is more than aware of the dangers of allowing himself to be swayed off course or to be distracted at a critical moment. He wouldn't be able to do much more than possibly keep someone alive for the time being.
Character Flaws:
Mental Scars: Though he is tough and strong willed, there are dangers specific to that in the mind when facing traumatic situations. Namely he suffers from PTSD, though usually under control in some sense or another, he is often troubled by restless sleep, traumatic memories, and deeply disturbing dreams. This causes him to frequently be poorly rested or sometimes seize up in social situations.
Old injuries: His legs took the brunt of damage during his savage beating, and although they are more or less healed, he cannot run as fast as he once could. His legs can get stiff at times.
Tech Illiterate: he had little to no access to fancy technology living on the street and as such has little idea how to use it. He texts with one finger like a caveman, and somehow manages to delete the OS of a computer someone let him use.
Hypervigilance: while it is normally seen as a strength his history has left him in a state of mild paranoia, creating mind games where he sometimes has to determine whether or not the threat he believes is there is a false positive or not. This can create a sense of paralysis in unfamiliar situations where a threat may be present but isn’t clear.
Backstory: Ryo’s life was not always so dark, he lived as the heir to a famous textile family, who’s crafts were known nationwide, their traditional designs graced well known members of the shogunate and even members of the imperial household at tea parties and major events. However as their designs fell more out of favor so did their prosperity. The Issue resulted in debts, and the family grew unable to pay them, with fewer and fewer options his father turned to the yakuza, which ended in disaster. His parents were killed by an overzealous enforcer, and their assets seized. He ended up on the street, surviving hand to mouth.
Eventually he got jobs, his uncommon natural frame making him well suited for work as muscle, that was until the yakuza realized who he was. Declaring his family’s debts his own they took him into a form of slavery where he was trained from a young age to fight and kill to eat and survive. By the time he grew old enough to take care of himself he knew no other way of life.
He became involved with a woman named Kaiya,, who while older than him helped him find a sense of peace, and to feel like someone cared for him. Though she was not without her own troubles, as she had gotten involved in drugs. A mid ranking yakuza decided that he had wanted her, and decided that ryo needed to be put out of the picture. The confrontation ended in an ambush and although ryo fought tooth and nail, he was overcome by numbers and surprise. He was beaten within an inch of his life and left for dead in an abandoned residential district. They figured some yokai would handle disposal of the body.
However fate had other plans in store for him…
A Gashadokuro was fleeing an exorcist, having been weakened by the shinsengumi and the Shinto priests it had precious little time before it’s grudge would evaporate, and the skeletal monster along with it. How lucky was it to find a dying man with a grudge blazing in his heart as the final flames of his life began to gutter.
“I can’t die… not yet…”
“A wrong committed…” a response chattered “Sins to be avenged… we are two of a kind…”
“Who are you?”
“A nameless Grudge….” the reply chattered with the voice whistling slightly, as if it were air moving through a bone flute, “Shall we join as one? Persist, and continue on!”
“Of course… I have nothing left to lose…”
He awoke in a hospital bed, the Shinsengumi having found him after He and the Yokai had fused, he found out that he was now, what they called a Demi-Yokai, and he would need to be registered. They offered him free college and a business card if he did so long as he attended a specific school. He had considered it somewhat, preferring to seek his revenge, at least until he received Kaiya’s Suicide note.
Now with nothing left and a grudge that couldn’t be avenged he seeks to chart a new path, unsure if he would join the Shinsengumi he decided he would at least take the free ride. Who knows maybe he’d catch a lead.
Family, Friends Etc:
Kaiya Female 28: his former lover, believed deceased. She was involved in drugs and fell in with a rough crowd including Yakuza. Where she is now or if she is truly dead is unknown.
Bacchus Male Age 55: Possibly an alias, an older foreigner who saw Ryo fighting and decided to train him and teach him how to live self sufficiently. Comes in from overseas from time to time to check on Ryo’s current progress. A drunk, a Lech, and some might consider a rapscallion. And yet rumor has it he is a famous martial artist using a pseudonym to take on disciples
Powers:
Power Theme: Demi-Yokai, Fused with a Gasahdokuro. Bone and Ghostflame manipulation.Ghostflame, otherwise known as soul flame or spirit fire is a heat-less light emitting flame that actually feels cold to the tough. it does nothing more than emit light and chill in standard intensity. when used to cause harm it does not cause burns but rather necrosis.
Rank C Ability: 死者の回復力 Shisha no kaifuku-ryoku (resilience of the dead): At the moment of impact bone armor appears in a flash of ghostflame at the point of impact, reducing the consequences of the attack by one step. Something that would incapacitate him severely injures him instead, a severe injury becomes a lighter one, a light injury simply bounces off. Ryo must be aware of the attack, and Staving off multiple attacks at once is not possible as he must concentrate on the attack and point of impact. Overuse of the ability will cause it to fail and shatter. the flame imparts nothing more than a psychological affect and looking sick as hell.
Rank B Ability: 魂喰い Tamashī kui (Soul Eater) He Wreathes his arm in a gauntlet of bone blazing with ghostflame and strikes his opponent, dealing enough damage to inflict a minor injury. This attack is not a physical attack so much as an attack of the soul, fatiguing his target and preventing them from using their C-rank active powers for one turn, as they must dig deeper to push through the fatigue. This affect cannot be applied multiple times as it requires at least one post cycle for the targets spirit to recover enough to be vulnerable to it again. He can then use this energy to either heal himself or one ally in range to be touched, reducing an injury by one step as the ice cold flames become pleasantly warm and soothing. This ability can only apply the minor physical damage to targets that do not have the ability to cast powers. If he is unable to apply the disable for any reason, he cannot use the healing effect as well.
Rank C Passive: 容赦のない男 Yōsha no nai otoko (Implacable Man): Ryo has become completely immune to the effects of pain, while this effect it does nothing to prevent the injury, it also renders him immune to effects that rely on his reaction to pain, though the drawback is that it might make him not realize how hurt he actually is, causing further injury. It causes immunity to effects that rely on feelings of physical pain, but has no impact on mental or spiritual attacks unless they contain a component of physical pain. (in DnD terms he would be immune to the power word pain spell)
