Name: Bernard of the Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem
Age: 27
Birthdate: 11/05
Nationality/Cultural Group: Place of birth, N/A. Raised amongst the Teutonic Order chapter in Lithuania
Height: 6ft 5in
Weight: 198 lbs
Gender: Male
Affiliations: Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, under the jurisdiction of the Vatican.
Appearance: Only the right green eye is visible through the brass mask covering the face. What skin is visible is reddish pale, scarred and scabbed. The mask leaves the mouth visible, making breathing easier, and revealing soft, sorrowful smile of a man at peace with fate. Bandages cover most of the skin visible, around the head and hands peeking under the grey monk robe. The sleeves of mail can be seen inside the sleeves as well. Heavy greaves covering the boots are occasionally visible when he moves. Posture of a soldier, voice of a preacher, and gaze of a poet.
Belongings: Heavy bardiche, with oaken handle. On the side of the blade, text is inscribed from the chapter 11 of the book of Ecclesiates. Chainmail pauldrons and greaves (covered by robe).Bag containing water canteen, the Holy Bible, folder of documents from the Order, money (assuming he has any at the moment). Silver/iron crucifix around neck.
Personality: Raised in monastery, he has taken the monk vows according to his faith. This limits severly his personal life, but his behavior towards other people is relatively lax. Being Lazarus Knight errant, he sees eradicating hostile yokai as his duty. While wary of the more benevolent yokai, this is due the unfamiliarity of them, rather than hatred. His pilgrimage to East is dictated by his revelation, and he lets his heart and instincts guide him, rather than having a strict goal.
Character Strengths:
- Warrior monk. Bernard was raised and trained by two military orders, making him both strong and skilled in combat.
- Way with words. Be it knowledge given by his upbringing, or wisdom borne from suffering, Bernard has a charismatic demeanor and gift of words that allows him to comfort others or solve conflicts peacefully.
- Language savant. Bernard has an uncanny knack for language. Before his pilgrimage he already knew German, Frecnh, English and Latin. While journeying his way to the East, he picked almost every language he came across to, such as Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Burmese, Mandarin and Korean. He speak these fluently, and is reading Japanese on his way.
Character Flaws:
- Beware the sickness. If Bernards imposing size isn't scary enough, the leprosy has left it's visible marks on him. Terrifying disease make people wary of him, and most choose to avoid him.
- "In the world of the blind..." Leprosy has not been kind to his body. Sickness took his left eye, leaving his field of vision and depth perception in limited state.
- Man out of time. Being still bound by his oaths, Bernard is woefully equipped for the modern world. He refuses the use of cellphones or other "unnecessary" technologies. Communicating might be difficult, but at least he's not bombarded by ads.
Backstory: Like many orphaned children given to the care of the Catholic church, Bernard was given a choice to join one of the many knightly orders associated with the Church. Seeing the heroic depictions of knights protecting the weak, young Bernard did't hesitate. At the age of 12, he joined the Teutonic order, and begin his training. As he aged, his skills and talent for martial paths were substantially above his peers, only to be enhanced by his size and strength. Many of the order expected great many things from the young man. But fate would have different path, for disaster struck. For completely unkown reason, Bernard contracted leprosy at the age of 17. Many medical expert and even healing power user of the order tried their best, but there was no curing him. Estimates he was given expected he had only few years left. Naturally, the order let him go, for they couldn't allow ailing man fight, let alone risk infecting others.
Distraught, Bernard tried to make sense of his condition. Scriptures didn't bring him peace, so he took pilgrimage to the most holiest place. Jerusalem. There, he visited all the holiest places he could find, until he finally reached Golgata. The place of crucifixion. It was then, when certainty of death made his faith waver, and he raged against the empty sky, and revelation came to him. What ever he saw gave him new purpose, and power to go along with it. He sought out the Order of St Lazarus, and pleaded to discuss with their grandmaster. After explaining the nature of his revelation and demonstrated the powers bestowed upon him by it, the grandmaster Athos de Acre allowed him to sworn himself to the order. His training in the order mostly consisted of getting used to his newfound powers and teaching him how to manage his condition. In the age of 21, Bernard began his pilgrimage, his legs carrying him towards East, his heart filled with purpose, and remaining eye noticing beauty he had never noticed before.
Now, at the age of 27, Bernard stands in the Western shore of Sea of Japan, wondering what is the most convenient way to cross?
Family, Friends Etc.: Athos de Acre, the grandmaster of the Order of the St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. Stationed in Jerusalem, 68 year old grandmaster is a seasoned warrior and power user, thus his guidance was valuable to Bernard in his path. Stern aesthetic, tempered with warm disposition and deep insight of human condition. As a Vatican affiliated groups leader, he can be contacted through any Catholic organisation in any country.
Powers: The following section is where you construct your powers. The setup below is a suggestion and a higher end cap. Be aware that Passives are considered a rank lower in effect strength with the trade off of being sustained and always on unless suppressed.
Power Theme: Divine Revelation. "Adversity and existence are one and the same."
Rank C Ability: Rain in the forest: Power to regenerate himself from injuries in relatively fast rate, except instantly fatal ones. Power needs focus to be used, so it cannot be used in conflict. Example: if someone stabs through him, he needs at least 12 hours to recover from it. Can repair severed limbs, if the bones are set and muscle stiched.
Combat use of the skill allows him to repair severe damage to point of usability (stop bleeding, turn broken joints into sprains, etc.). Overuse of the combat application makes previous fixes fail (closed wounds open, other injuries revert to previous state). Current amount he can do without strain 3.
Rank B Ability: Blood in the Mud: When enemy cuts into Bernards flesh, they become stuck, not being able to pull away, or move Bernard. This skill isn't automatic, and doesn't work on trauma that doesn't cut into him, like blunt force. Size and strength of the enemy doesn't matter. Bernard can move if he pleases when the power is active, thus forcing the attached object follow him, and he can release the power as he wishes.
Rank C Passive: Mountains defy the consuming sea: Minor damage resistance to attacks. Not enough to nullify damage, but combined with his armor allows him to survive a bit longer. Also slows the progress of his disease, and prevents it from spreading to other people.
