Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai (Obon Event #1)
Which translates to 100 supernatural tales is something that dates back to the Edo period. It is a Buddhist inspired game that is still somewhat popular during Obon. The game is considered a test of courage, and is supposed to summon spirits! The simplest form of the game is to sit in the middle of a lit room with 100 candles. As the players take turns, they tell a scary story. This story is as long or as short as it requires to be chilling. Upon completion of a story, a participant will blow out a candle upon finishing that story. Supposedly, if you make it to the last light and finish the 100th story, a ghost will appear when you blow out the final candle.
Summertime is often a really great time to share stories that chill the blood when it is so hot and muggy! It’s the essential treat (other than that ice cream or chilled fruit) for summertime. I would like to open a thread just for Obon to tell our stories in. This will be open all August to contribute to starting August 1st, but will lock the first day of September. You will still be able to go back and read all the stories, but you will have to wait to post till next time.
Stories can be as short as the two sentence stories or as long as a handful of paragraphs (try to keep it reasonable for both). Stories can be spooky, odd, scary and/or weird! Please try to keep it reasonable to the terms of the site of course.
Now, if we do manage to make it to 100 stories, which seems unlikely the first try, but might be fun to try in any case, a special yurei will have to make an appearance!
What will it be?
Guidelines/Format for stories:
* Number of the story and Title
Example: 1. The Locker at Station Sixteen
* Body of the story: This can be as short as a few sentences or as long as several paragraphs. Keep in mind, these are meant to be short stories, specifically ghost stories like the kind you would tell at a sleepover or around a campfire. Please keep each story you submit to one post. So, one story per post. You may post as many stories as you like, but one at a time. That way, others have a chance to tell a story too. It can be as scary or strange as you like as long as it is something that is allowed on the board. (See community rules or flag one of us mods down if you are unsure, otherwise you should be fine!)
* End: To signal the end of the story, a candle emoji or a candle gif attached to your post is fine.
I will be posting the thread today and opening it close to midnight eastern time!
Happy haunting!
