Name:Noriko Moritaka
Age:35
Birthdate: 22/06
Nationality/Cultural Group:Japanese, originally from Matsue, Shimane Prefecture
Height: 5’6
Weight: Small and slight, with a willowy frame.
Gender: Female
Affiliations:NAPI, and Tachibana Publications
Appearance: A pale, thin woman with shoulder length hair and a waxy appearance. She tends to keep her reporting gear on her and looks as if sleep and her do not know each other.
Belongings: A small old motor bike. Camera equipment in a camera bag. One of the cameras in the bag is an old POLAROID MODEL 420 PACKFILM LAND CAMERA that can stun and exorcize spirits through capturing them on film. She also carries a backpack that carries an old laptop, a beat up cell phone and a few tools of exorcism such as sake, water from a temple, rice and salt. She tends to keep a lighter in the front pocket of her military style coat.
Personality:She has a quiet, thoughtful personality. Someone would think she is a little sleepy and morose. If she does smile, it’s a wry smile. One that see the irony of things. Simply put, she is the type of person that has stared death in the face, via a strong curse and lived. Moritaka was a very go-getter type journalist that investigated true crimes and mysterious disappearances for a newspaper. After the curse, she smoked a little more, had developed somewhat of a thousand yard stare, and a somewhat weakened constitution.
Character Strengths: Noriko Moritaka has a strong sense of justice and a curious mind. She wants to give people closure, and doesn’t want anyone to go without an answer, this often gets her into spaces and situations she shouldn’t be in. She has a soft heart as well. She tries to help anyone she can.
Character Flaws: Noriko can seem a bit depressed and has some moments of very self deprecating humor. She has been grappling with survivor’s guilt due to the fact that she has survived a curse that has killed every other person it has encountered. It’s even extended to killing people in her friend circle, so while she wants to have friends, she has kept most everyone she meets at an arm’s length away, for fear that when the curse she caries is no longer dormant, it will take everyone around her (and her with it). She blames herself for three deaths in particular: her boyfriend Kenji Kurida, her office mate and friend Mariko Hu, and her mentor Rei Morishiba.
Backstory: Noriko Moritaka was once a very tenacious reporter. She worked hard for a Japanese tabloid called The Tokyo Lantern. This publication was one she started working at out of college, which was an education in journalism and photography. Noriko had photography as a hobby and was very into taking shots for her own stories. She was raised by her mother who had distanced herself from Noriko when she was in highschool, her parents were divorced, but she never really found out the reason until she had graduated. Her father simply disappeared one night, and her mother never spoke of it, unless it was to shut down any talk about him. For years she wondered, and it caused a gulf between them.
Noriko was invited to a funeral during her sophomore year of college, her father’s. It was put on by a few friends of his, and she got the impression she did not really even know him. After the wake, she was approached by a colleague who introduced himself simply as Edward Morikumo. Edward let her into her father’s office and let her rummage around for a few hours alone. He had books on psychic photography, ESP, Japanese folklore, religious texts, and stacks of journals.
She managed to get his locked desk open with a letter opener. Inside was an old camera with a journal. Some of the things in the room were pictures he had taken himself with the camera, and some of the images looked downright disturbing. Warped, over exposed people, things without rational explanation on film. She couldn’t help but scoop up some of the journals and the strange, ornate camera.
Family, Friends Etc:
Kenji Kurida, boyfriend (deceased)-Noriko’s boyfriend of five years. At one point they were living together, but she couldn’t handle living in their shared apartment after he died. She met him in her last year in college, and they bonded over taking photographs, eating take out and riding Vespas. He deeply loved poetry, and it’s hard sometimes to hear or see poetry and not think of him. He died from a yurei attack, trying to protect its real target, Noriko.
Mariko Hu, friend and officemate (deceased)- A colleague who worked at the Lantern, and was friends with Noriko. The two of them used to raid the snack machine in the hallway on nights where deadlines were due. They bonded over having to put up with their mutual boss, Morishiba who was the editor for the Lantern. She died from a freak accident in the building’s elevator. It’s assumed by Noriko that this had something to do with indirect contact from the curse she bears.
Rei Morishiba, mentor (deceased)- Former editor of an occult mag that Noriko and Mariko worked at. He died in a freak elevator accident in the building.
Edward Morikumo, an associate of her late father’s- A lot is not known about this man. He is rumored to be a spider yokai, but there aren’t a lot of records on him. He was helping Noriko’s father investigate something when he passed away, later contacting Noriko herself. Noriko is under the belief that he used her to avoid a powerful curse from one of the objects in her father’s office.
Sutan Moritaka, mother (estranged)- Sutan is Noriko’s mother, she divorced Jun when Noriko was in middle school. She struggled raising Noriko alone and is very bitter about her ex-husband and the fact he was a supernatural magnet. When her daughter decided to delve into her father’s past and attend his funeral, it frayed an already strained relationship, causing her to cut Noriko out of her life. It wasn’t out of cruelty either. It was out of not wanting to see Noriko go down the same path. She couldn’t bear to watch it.
Jun Morikaka, father (deceased)- Noriko’s father, who was a researcher into paranormal incidents. Supposedly had no latent abilities. He liked to use spirit photography to investigate hauntings, and did a lot of research into the paranormal. Jun was divorced by his wife in his mid thirties, due to an investigation that got a little too close for comfort, causing a yokai (8 foot tall) to become interested in young Noriko. Jun managed to solve the case and keep the yokai from taking his daughter, however the terror of events and fight with his wife was relationship ending, Sutan took their daughter and left the moment she got the chance. He never remarried and choose to continue to investigate using the spirit camera until his bizarre death.
Powers: Spirit Camera/ Spirit Detective
Power Theme:Spirit exorcism based camera, and uncontrolled precognition.
Rank C Ability:Camera stun- The flash from Noriko’s camera can disrupt a yokai’s actions or damage/injure them. It does not last long, only a few seconds, and can be done for as many times as she has film. Noriko has to aim with the camera to do it, and it can be a little disorentating in the depth perception department, due to the camera’s lens. Film cartridges tend to be 10 photos for a regular cartridge and 20 for a super.
Rank B Ability: Spirit Seal- It is a capture- based exorcism. The yurei/spirit has to be weak enough for its use. It takes a few minutes to properly charge as well, leaving the user vulnerable. But when executed properly, it can seal/exorcize a spirit.
Rank C Passive: Uncontrolled precognition (as a device for people in the thread or the mod handling things to give a vague clue or red-herring to Noriko). It can cause migraines and dizziness when it happens, so Noriko may faint or have to crouch or sit.
