I am a huge fan of Sengoku Basara. It is relatively popular in Japan more than the US. It is loosely taking part of the warring states period with all the warlords fighting for supremacy of the land. They exaggerate relationships, the laws of physics and is hilarious with some darker moments showing up the later the series gets. As Basara evolved, so did it's roster and it's movesets to differentiate from more popular musou like Samurai Warriors.
The series first came in Japan as the first game: Sengoku Basara on the PS2, then localized in the US under the name Devil Kings (marking similar font and style towards their other franchise Devil May Cry. Of course I have Devil Kings on my PS2, but I vastly prefer the original Sengoku Basara over it. A year or so later Japan got Sengoku Basara 2 and a couple years got Sengoku Basara 2 heroes and the US got nothing til Sengoku Basara 3 (which was localized as Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes).
The PS2 was region locked meaning that it can't play any software from a foreign country. When the PS3 launched, it came region free and that's how I got to play the first three games of the Sengoku Basara franchise. No Sengoku Basara X (the fighting game) which is a bit weird but not missed.
There's quite a bit to do, with trophies or titles ready to collect and to challenge. There's also plenty of items and weapons to power up your chosen character. There's no time limit to completing the battles, which is nice for those that explore the stage and just want to kill everything in sight. Also the fact that you are your own boss means there's no allied commander to protect. Each stage has it's own gimmick to shake things up as well as a boss. It's easy to pick up and learn but hard to master. That's the musou game genre as a whole.
I'll start putting guides here for more in depth reviews of each game at a later date.
