Epic had this game for free and I was able to snag it. I swear, this game is awesome. I may have to stream it, because not only is it a really fun, spooky experience, but- it's fairly accurate when it comes to Yokai and Yurei lore! I got pretty hooked after three hours of gameplay. If any of you would like to hang out and watch me run around Tokyo collecting spirits I would certainly oblige. The story is pretty good so far, and that is without the fun side quest and cute little Nekomata shop keepers, cats you can read the minds of, and dogs.
The story is fairly simple. The protagonist, Akito Izuki is trying to speed to the hospital on his motorcycle to get to his sister, Mari, who lies in a medicated coma in the hospital after the events of an apartment fire. As he is hurrying in transit, he wreaks horribly. As he is dying, a spirit is flying over the scene, looking for a body to inhabit. As this happens, people rush to help, and a mysterious fog rolls up, causing the people to instantly become spirits. When this happens, creatures called Visitors, which look a lot like salary-slendermen start to walk down the street in a Honshu Night Parade like procession.
These guys are creepy, and our protag, manages to stay alive with a little help from the possessing spirit. Initially, they hate one another and fight over Aki's body. But, you find out that the spirit is not really a bad guy, he's a Spirit Hunter (my choice of labeling) with unfinished business. Seeing as how the protag, Aki has already died, he thought he was fine to possess the body and got duke it out with the guy causing all this, a former associate that wishes to reshape the world by using the spirits currently floating in the world as batteries, and by using Aki's sister, Mari as a conduit or witness to shape this new world.
Both Aki and KK (the man possessing him) will do anything to keep this from happening. And, with Aki using KK's abilities, he can scoop up spirits before the man in the Hanya mask (our baddie) and exorcise both yokai and yurei alike. As you purify more shrines and clear out the toxic fog, you grow stronger and get new abilities which help with some of the unique monsters! I have already fought things like Kuchisake-onna, a kappa, the yurei of a hikkomori (bent on collecting souls and damning them), and there are way more.
Right now, it's 20 bucks online and I think it might be even cheaper used at a gamestop. Another thing that is set in the universe is Ghostwire Tokyo Prelude: The corrupted Casefile. That is free right now on all platforms. It's a visual novel style prequel to Ghostwire. The game has a bit of a background of KK and his group. I have not actually played it yet, but I plan on it.
